Do you wake up with a headache every morning? Headaches upon waking are common with 1 in 13 people experiencing it. Unfortunately I was one of those people who would wake up with a headache every morning. After a little research I realised it was caused by a number of factors from having a poor night’s sleep, stress and at times I was dehydrated.
Before getting on to the question “why do I wake up with a headache every morning” I wanted to share with you the differences in headaches.
What are the different types of headaches?
For me my headache results in a dull pain but headaches can also be a sharp pain or a throbbing pain.
Types of headaches that are associated with having a headache when you wake up are:
- cluster headache
- tension headache
Wake up with a headache? What could be causing it.
Drinking too little water and drinking too much alcohol could be causing you to waken up with a headache in the morning. I often keep a glass for fresh water beside my bed as there have been times when I waken up thirsty especially after having a heavy meal in the evenings. The thing about drinking too much alcohol is that it reduces the volume of blood flowing to your brain and can give you that waking up with a headache feel.
Messed up sleep patterns
If you haven’t had a good night’s sleep it can lead to wake up with a headache every morning. In this age we are so connected to our phones, we bring them to bed and this impacts upon the quality of our sleep and our sleep patterns – especially if we are using screens! If you want to know how to improve your sleep then read my post on how to improve the quality of your sleep.
As a mom when our boys were young and we were on holiday, it meant we had to share a bed with the kids. Wow, they really ended up in some awkward sleep positions. Well the same is true of adults. If you sleep at an unusual angle it could result in you suffering from head and neck strain with the result of you waking up with a headache every morning. To improve your alignment check out my post on How to Use a Bed Wedge for Sleeping.
Stress & Anxiety
Stress and anxiety can cause you to have headaches upon waking. This results from anything like tense shoulders, tense jaws or even ruminating about what is going on. Check out my post on Ways to Step Thinking so you can sleep for some great ways to get a great night’s sleep and reduce your stress and anxiety.
Grinding your teeth
My husband has gone through a lot with me snoring and previously grinding my teeth! Did you know that grinding your teeth can cause you to wake up with a headache every morning you have been grinding? The act of doing this puts stress on your muscles and if they are over-stressed it results in headaches upon waking. To stop my grinding I visited my dentist who suggested a mouth guard. It helped stop the grinding and headaches upon waking.
Some people suggest you can wake up with headaches every morning if you suffer from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is when your breathing breaks during the night. If you think you suffer from sleep apnea please go to your doctor who will be able to help you deal with this issue.
Have you ever tried to cut down on caffeine? Wow, it’s tough – no more so with the headaches you get. Drinking coffee in excess can cause you to dehydrate and if you drink in the evening it can impact upon the quality of your sleep. That could be one of the reasons you have headaches upon walking.
If you wake up with a headache every morning your first port of call is your doctor. If they suggest you can manage it yourself then consider the information above which will help you manage the situation and help you improve your quality of sleep so you no longer have headaches upon waking.
